I have been in the process of preparing my electroacoustic opera, “Unseal Unseam,” to premiere at Highways Performance Space October 6 & 7 of this year. Unseal Unseam is an opera that examines the too-often invisible world of domestic violence. My collaborators Sharon Chohi Kim, Shannon Knox and I aim to create new opera that reclaims and reshapes the female narratives that dominate traditional opera. To that end, with Unseal Unseam, we want to represent and reflect a narrative that lives in the truths of our communities. We want this piece to serve as a site of both healing and analysis, so we are currently reaching out to women’s shelters and groups in the Los Angeles area to offer free voice-healing workshops along with a series of creative prompts through which people may share their relationship to the phenomenon of domestic violence. We have compiled the prompts in this google form:

The answers to the prompt are completely anonymous and will inspire and inform the musical gestures of our new score. I am sharing this here to see if anyone in my community feels moved to participate in this voice healing and reflection, and/or knows of any other groups we could reach out to. Again, we want to emphasize that the form is completely anonymous, and no one should feel pressure to share events, stories, or experiences that they don't feel comfortable offering. Participants should feel free to fill in as much or as little as they'd like. If you'd like to talk more or have any questions, please message me. Thank you in advance for your reflections and your light.

Unseal Unseam, an original electroacoustic opera composed by Sharon Chohi Kim & Micaela Tobin, directed by Shannon Knox, will be co-presented at Highways Performance Space (Artistic Directors Leo Garcia and Patrick Kennelly) October 6th & 7th. More info here.
